How to find customers on X (Twitter) from replies, reposts and searches

Last updated: 26 October 2026

On X, buyers show up in replies and searches: someone asks for a recommendation, complains about a tool, or answers a post in your market. Search for those moments, read who replied or reposted, and start with a helpful reply or a follow before you write privately.

X moves fast, so recent posts matter more here than anywhere else. A request from this morning is live; one from last week is probably answered.

Searches that surface buyers on X

  • Request phrases plus your category: "anyone recommend", "looking for", "what do you use for", "alternative to".
  • Complaint phrases: "frustrated with", "is it just me or", "switching from", with a competitor's name.
  • Your category plus a question mark. People often phrase needs as questions.
  • Replies under accounts your customers follow, such as industry voices, founders and competitors.

Who you can collect on X

You can collect people who replied to or reposted a post, followers of an account, and people who match a search. X hides who liked a post, so likes cannot be collected. Replies are the best signal: they are public, written in the person's own words and easy to read before you decide.

Prefer recent and specific

  1. Sort by latest when you want open requests, and by top when you want to learn how a topic is discussed.
  2. Read the whole reply and the post it answers. Context decides whether the person is a buyer.
  3. Skip accounts that only post promotions, bots and accounts with no history.

Reach out in a way X allows

A useful public reply is the best first step and the least risky. Following the person is next. Direct messages are only possible when the account accepts messages from you, and many do not, so check before you plan around one.

X limits fast, repetitive activity and can restrict accounts that follow or message in bulk. Keep your pace modest, vary your wording and do not send the same note to everyone.

A reply that earns attention

Under "anyone know a good tool for tracking invoices?": "We tried three. The thing that mattered most was whether it syncs with your bank, so check that first. Happy to share what we learned about the setup if useful." It answers, it names no product, and it invites a next step they control.

Where Avocado Leads fits

Avocado Leads does the collecting, ranking and pacing part of this work. You paste a post, a profile or a search, and it saves the people who commented, reacted, followed or match, then scores each person from 0 to 100 on buying language, how recently they were active, how well they fit your business and how reachable they are.

It then runs a paced follow or connect campaign from your own signed-in browser, with a message after where the platform allows one. It never asks for your social passwords, and it keeps to hourly, daily, weekly and monthly caps for each network. The limits that come with each platform are on the platforms page, and the safety page explains what it will not do.

Questions people ask

Can I see who liked a post on X?

No. X does not list likes, so the people you can work with are repliers, reposters and followers.

Can I message anyone on X?

Only people whose accounts accept messages from you. Many accounts do not, so a public reply or a follow is the safer first step.

How recent should an X post be?

The newer the better. A request from the last day or two is likely still open.
